Clinical scenarios are a key component of medical interviews. Here’s how to approach them effectively:

  1. Stay Calm and Structured: Use a systematic approach like ABCDE (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure) to assess clinical situations.

  2. Ask for Clarification: If details are unclear, don’t hesitate to ask the interviewer for more information. This demonstrates critical thinking.

  3. Prioritise Patient Safety: Always consider patient safety first. For example, stabilising a critically ill patient takes precedence over gathering a detailed history.

  4. Show Teamwork: Acknowledge the need to involve other professionals when appropriate. For instance, “I would escalate this to the senior clinician on duty.”

  5. Think Aloud: Share your thought process with the interviewer. This gives insight into your clinical reasoning and decision-making skills.

  6. Review Guidelines: Familiarise yourself with relevant clinical guidelines, such as NICE or local trust protocols, to support your answers.

By remaining calm, structured, and patient-focused, you can demonstrate your clinical competence and readiness for training.
